It was more than nice to have the island back in the states. Even if that was the most traveling she'd done in...

Ever.

Right now, Renee was just going to enjoy a nice quiet evening at home. Or something.

After getting off the plane from Tibet, Renee had to make her way to Kate's apartment.

Just in case.

Kate could take care of her self normally, but with Intergang...

She knocked on the door, but that was pointless as it gave way and opened upon the touch. To reveal the ruined apartment and a large gaping hole where a balcony must have once been,

"No."

Too late.

She was going to have to look.

She wanted to. Shine the light into those dark corners, stare into the self-made abyss... And see what stares back.

Don't be afraid.

Just open your eyes...

What do you see?

Renee opened her eyes and saw... herself. Without a face.

"...good question."

She returned to the cave alone.

Had to be.

This needed to been something she did without Richard, with-- Charlie...

It was the real question now: What was more powerful-- her fear or her curiosity?

The candle went out.

"Pondering the insoluable?"

Tot's voice broke Renee's thoughts as she stared at the rose Isis gave her. Still in bloom, still utterly perfect.

"How can your flower continue to live without food, water or soil?" He continued. "Or just asking why it, like you, are still alive?" There was a small pause before he added, "And Charlie isn't."

Renee shook her head, still looking at the rose. "I was... remembering when Isis gave it to me. I think she knew Charlie was sick, Tot. I think she knew there was nothing she could do."

Sighing, Tot sat down and grabbed one of his many books. "I can't speak to that. ...Renee, where have you been?"

"I was on the mountain." Renee answered dully, putting the rose down. "With the monks."

"You walked off, Renee. You left without a word. Not to me, not to Richard."

"Where is Richard?"

Tot shot her a look. "At that ice cave of his. He wants you to meet him there."

Who are you? )

She couldn't wait in the village any longer, not with how urgent it was to get him to Nanda Parbat. Not with how the people there refused to help her with this. Wouldn't even give directions.

So she went out to find it.

She wasn't crazy, she just wanted him to live.

That was all she wanted.

Charlie was getting worse.

The best doctors that Kate could find weren't helping at all. Not like it had been in Nanda Parbat.

A place where time stood still.

Renee knew it was a bad idea to move him now, but it was an even worse one to leave him to die here without a fight.

It wasn't denial, it was defiance.

Kate left them alone in the penthouse, out hunting for Manheim again.

She didn't say that was what she was doing and Renee didn't ask, but she knew. Hard not to know if you knew Kate.

Pausing in the doorway of the room Charlie had been put up in, she sighed, watching him and the skyline in the window beyond him.

Kate had oh so graciously offered them a place to stay in her penthouse. But more importantly, brought in her doctor 'friend' to check out Charlie for them.

They came here to save Kate's life but the cost was shortening Charlie's even more it seemed.

She wasn't sure if they did the right thing or not if that was the result.

Shaking her head, Renee picked up a phone to check on how things were going in Fandom. And, after not getting anyone the first try, she dialed again.

"So much for your prophecy," Batwoman said, letting the steel heel in her boot do the work knocking the teeth out of the lizard creature's mouth.

Flipping over one of the pews in the church, she knocked another man out. One of many already taken care of.

"I've always felt that people should take responsibility for their actions," She continued, looking over the scene for anyone still ready to fight. "Not excuse them by denying there was any choice in the matter."

Nanda Parbat, Tibet - Monday

Time stands still in Nanda Parbat.

Weeks, days, hours... they don't mean shit here. Everything is set by routine. Felt like she'd been here forever at this rate.

Charlie said he brought her here to train under Richard Dragon. His old teacher. What he was teaching her, other than falling down and getting her ass kicked, was a mystery.

He said she needed to stop running away and run with. When she asked how, he just told her 'acceptance'.

Her pain, her cold, her frustration, her heartache... he told her to cherish it. "Only when you want it to stay, you will release it."

Nothing here made sense. "If I cherish it, I won't want it to leave," Renee hissed, throwing another punch at his still form.

"Someone else said the said thing. I'll tell you what I told him. I never said it would be easy."

Richard Dragon, ladies and gentlemen.

Charlie's friend Tot...? Has been trying to decode the book they found. The Crime Bible. Days of that. Light reading, huh?

But Charlie. What did Charlie do this time here?

There were rats in Kahndaq. Not all of them were of the rodent type.

They were hiding in Charlie's shipping container. Damn lucky 'Tot' sent it to him. Ever since they broke out of prison.

Keeping to the shadows and out of sight, Renee slipped back into the thing, a satchel at her side. They needed food and water.

Well... Charlie needed it more than her.

Shiruta, Kahndaq - Friday Evening

  • Feb. 29th, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Anyone who calls the prisons in the US were inhumane needed to go to one in Kahndaq.

They called two beatings a day an interrogation.

//"Careful, the she-wolf still has fire in her."//

She didn't know what the hell the guards were saying, but it was more than clear that they wanted her to confess to killing five men. Trouble was, she hadn't done a damn thing like that. Neither had Charlie.

They didn't take kindly to finding a guy without a face as a suspect either.

As they led her down the hallway, she kept her eye out for Charlie's cell. He hadn't looked so good since the last time she'd been trotted by to break their spirits. Morons.

But... he wasn't there.

"Charlie!" Renee shouted, breaking away from the guards to cling to the bars and look inside. Not another partner...
The cell was empty. It didn't look clean by any stretch of the word, but it did look cleaned out. As if no one were using it anymore. The guards glanced idly over at the cell, clearly not really paying attention. They were far too busy watching Renee and grinning in a very uncomforting manner.
..smoke? No!

Renee grinned as the guard slammed her head against the bars, heading ringing, but knowing this would work. It just had to.

//"Smoke?"// The first guard asked, looking closer into the cell. The other held Renee against the bars tightly.

//"Better put it out then,"// the other answered.
"Binary gas, actually," Charlie answered as his fist slammed out to catch one of the two guards in the nose. "Better make this one count, Renee!"
"Don't have to say that twice," Renee said, a evil sort of glee in her voice at that. Twisting, she swung her shackled arms up to knock away his baton. Once that was taken care of, drove her knee up into his stomach and brought her elbow down on the man's head.
Despite his earlier display of strength, Charlie's voice sounds a bit thready. "The keys. As fast as you can. We don't have much time."
"I never thought I'd say this," Renee said, snagging the keys and unshackling herself before opening the cell door for him. "But I am very glad to see you."

A moment later she added, "Thought I lost you for good there."
"I'm--" Charlie paused to cough softly. "I'm with you all the way to the end, Renee." He stood unsteadily and reached an arm out to support himself on her shoulder. "We're in this one together."

Shiruta, Kahndaq - Wednesday Afternoon

It was a thirty one hour flight to Kahndaq. They changed flights twice, once in Paris and then again in Algiers.

Because there is no direct flight to Kahndaq from the states or Europe. Most of the world is utterly terrified of the country. Mostly due to the ruler, Black Adam. More a godking than a president.

The psychopath with the powers of Captain Marvel who ruled over the country entirely. He executed criminals in the city square every Wednesday and people cheered.

But they were there for the reasons why this place was mentioned by Intergang. How it was connected to Gotham and the weapons there. Like Charlie, Renee was curious.

That was why she was over three thousand miles from home. That was why she was there in the middle of a city that looked nothing like how Charlie made it sound. Vibrant and full of people who seemed to be more friendly that Renee felt comfortable with.
Wasn't that exposition fun?! )

There was a naked man in her hotel room.

A naked meditating man.

Renee sighed. "Hi, honey. I'm home." No response. Of course not.

She grabbed a beer and tapped him on the head before going to sit on the couch and wait for him to put a pair of damn pants on.
